Flames center Olli Jokinen was off to a good start with five points in his first six games and looking more like the player who was good for 30 goals and 80 points earlier in his career. He had a miserable start last season and finished with 17 goals and 54 points with wholesale new era hats.
The difference, he says, is more mental than physical. The 32-year-old has been preparing for every game by speaking to his psychologist and concentrating on three aspects. He also has been trying to approach every game as if it could be his last one, which has helped motivate him.
"It helps me relax, helps me prepare for the games, so it's been good," Jokinen said. "In this league everybody's big, everybody's strong enough, everybody can skate, everybody can score. I think what difference makes a top player is mental preparation. If your head is not there, it's tough to play."

Sharks celebrate Thornton's 1000th game with win
Riding a three-game losing streak and down two goals to the New Jersey Devils despite having a wide
margin in shots, the San Jose Sharks could easily have given in to the frustration.
They didn't and started playing desperate hockey. It paid off.
Michal Handzus and Ryane Clowe scored shootout goals and the Sharks opened a six-game trip with a 4-3
victory on Friday night, marking captain Joe Thornton's 1,000 NHL game a memorable one.
"We wanted this to start the road trip out right," said Joe Pavelski, who forced the overtime by taking
a pass from Thornton and beating Johan Hedberg with 32.4 seconds left in regulation. "We didn't take
care of business at home when we had the chances. We had our chances and we tied the game up 2-2. We
want to get the next one but it didn't happen. Guys didn't drop down. We kept saying we'd find a way."
The Sharks rallied three times in the contest, from deficits of 2-0, 3-2 and then a 1-0 disadvantage in
the shootout after Ilya Kovalchuk converted for New Jersey and Pavelski missed the net.
"There was a little bit of frustration," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "It wasn't smooth going. As
coaches we could feel it. As the night went on and we got the two quick goals, we started to believe
again that it could be done. We felt the frustration come back after the third goal but we stuck with
it. It's a good sign for our team."
Zach Parise, who scored on a second-period penalty shot to give New Jersey its 2-0 lead, had a chance
to put the Devils ahead 2-0 in the shootout, but goalie Antti Niemi stopped his backhander. It was the
same type of shot Parise used to score on the penalty shot.
"You obviously don't want him to do the same thing again," said Niemi, who faced only 19 shots.
Handzus tied the shootout with a shot off the goalpost that caromed off Hedberg's leg and into the net.
Niemi stopped Elias with a pad save and Clowe won the game by deking Hedberg and sliding the puck into
the net.
"That's kind of the go-to move," said Clowe, who tied it at 2. "I usually go backhand. It's a little
easier I guess when you face the Eastern Conference goalies. They don't get to see you as much. Hedberg
is kind of a smaller goalie and I have a long stick and a long reach. I try to use that when I go to my
backhand."
Thornton had a goal and set up Pavelski's tying tally as the Sharks snapped the Devils' three-game
winning streak.
Patrik Elias and David Clarkson had the other goals for New Jersey, which got a 38-save performance
from Hedberg.
"We didn't play as well as we had been playing, and it showed. It wasn't our best effort, especially
around the net and it cost us," Parise said.
The Devils appeared headed for a victory in regulation when Clarkson scored all alone in front off a
nice setup by Mattias Tedenby with 6:42 to play. Clarkson got past former teammates Colin White, who
was playing his first game against the Devils.
The Sharks outshot their opponents 110-65 in losing their last three and the trend continued for much
of the first two periods against New Jersey.

Power rankings: NHL has a topsy-turvy look
In the first two weeks, it has been clear that what happened in the NHL last season is having little bearing on the start of this season.
The top four playoff teams (the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning and San Jose Sharks) are a combined 6-13-3, and the Sharks and Lightning haven't won in their last eight combined games. Meanwhile, the bottom four from last season's standings (the Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers and New York Islanders) are 13-6-1.
Last season's bottom four teams are ranked ahead of the Stanley Cup champion Bruins in the first edition of USA TODAY's NHL power rankings, and all but the Oilers lead the runner-up Canucks. The Washington Capitals are No.1, followed closely by the Detroit Red Wings.
"We signed a lot of NHL-caliber players in their mid- to late-twenties who had had success in other places," Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said. "We added depth to our roster, but what you don't know is how it will come together."
The Panthers have come together well enough to be ranked second in the NHL in power-play proficiency, a surprising climb, considering they ranked last in 2010-11.
"We have two units that are pretty good," Tallon said. "Before, we had three pieces, but we didn't have five. Now we can put 10 guys, and we have options on the back end. We have some guys that are creative with (Stephen) Weiss, (Kris) Versteeg and (Tomas) Fleischmann."

NHL suspends Penguins D Letang for 2 games
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang(notes) has been suspended for two games by the NHL for boarding Winnipeg Jets forward Alex Burmistrov(notes).
Letang's ban was handed out Tuesday, just hours before the Penguins beat the Minnesota Wild. The defenseman also will miss Thursday's home game against Montreal and be eligible to play on Saturday when the Penguins face New Jersey.
"It's always questionable," Letang said after Pittsburgh's 4-2 win at Minnesota. "The league is trying to avoid those hits. I think I just need to be a little bit more careful on the boards and learn from that."
Letang hit Burmistrov from behind and drove him into the boards at 13:08 of the third period during Pittsburgh's 2-1 loss at Winnipeg on Monday night. Letang, who was given a minor penalty for boarding, will lose $37,837.84 in salary for the suspension.
"They said at the moment I can see his number, I should've hit the brakes, or slow down, or try to let up, I guess," Letang said.
The Penguins recalled defenseman Brian Strait(notes) from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take Letang's spot in the lineup. Strait left Tuesday's game in the second period with an undisclosed upper body injury and didn't return.
Letang's absence comes at a tough time for Pittsburgh, which is already playing without Sidney Crosby(notes) (concussion), Evgeni Malkin(notes) (knee), Brooks Orpik(notes) (lower body), Tyler Kennedy(notes) (concussion), and Dustin Jeffrey(notes) (knee surgery).
"We're missing a lot of guys," Letang said. "Obviously, we're going through a big stretch, a tough stretch for all the guys. It's a bad spot in the year to take a suspension."

NHL: Pluses and minuses around the league
Three former N.H.L. enforcers said they have accepted Don Cherry's apology for calling them "pukes," "turncoats" and "hypocrites" on a "Hockey Night in Canada" telecast Oct 6. Cherry, a cantankerous analyst, apologized during the show Saturday, and called Stu Grimson, Chris Nilan and Jim Thomson, "my type of guys."
Grimson, Nilan and Thomson issued a statement Sunday saying, "Messrs. Grimson, Nilan and Thomson wish to state that they appreciate the words Mr. Cherry used and that the apology is accepted."
The statement, issued by a Nashville law firm where Grimson is a lawyer, also said that in light of the apology, the three do not plan to sue Cherry for his remarks.
Cherry touched off controversy during his popular segment by saying that critics of fighting in hockey had used the off-season deaths of Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak to advance their cause, and included Grimson, Nilan and Thomson among those critics.
But only Thomson has come out against fighting, saying that it played a role in his postcareer problems with addiction and depression.
"I've got to admit I was wrong on a lot of things," Cherry said during Saturday's "Hockey Night in Canada" telecast. "I put down three enforcers with snapback hats, tough guys, my type of guys, I threw them under the bus. I'm sorry about it, I really am."
Cherry apologized at length for misrepresenting Grimson and Nilan's views on fighting, and for suggesting that they had postcareer addiction problems like Thomson's. Grimson has not said he has had such problems, and Nilan, who has, said his addiction issues were not related to his career as an enforcer.
"These guys are three good guys," Cherry said. "I'm sorry that I put them down."
In a separate statement issued Sunday, Grimson urged Canadians concerned about the vitriol in the discourse on "Hockey Night" to contact the CBC ombudsman.
"The CBC is your network; you pay for it," Grimson said. "And you hold the network to certain standards and values. Among those values is the obligation to ??treat individuals with honesty and respect.' "
